Through a combination of lecture, discussions and hands-on labs, this five day training course will focus on developing business and presentation tier customizations for the Onyx Employee Portal and Onyx Enterprise Application Server.

At the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • Modify the look and feel of the UI using CSS and XSL.
  • Add links to the navigation bars that integrate Onyx data with an external website or custom forms.
  • Understand how to set up the development environment to debug Onyx.
  • Integrate Onyx information with an external database, and understand the process for doing so.
  • Work with the Generic Data Access Component access custom database objects and greatly reduce development time.
  • Implement COM+ Transactions to maintain data integrity across disparate systems.
  • Implement custom business rules, for example:
    • Automatically assign sales representatives based on territory rules.
    • Automatically send an email to a customer when a sales incident is created.
  • Implement the Onyx Scripting feature to allow you to:
    • Create custom forms without coding
    • Implement complex workflow rules and branching
    • Integrate Onyx data in Real time
  • Using the Security feature:
    • Secure UI resources
    • Secure Business Rules
  • Extend core Onyx functionality:
    • Add fields to existing objects and modifying the UI to display the fields
    • Add user preferences
    • Add custom UI features; such as adding tabs to the PowerPage
    • Add custom tables and stored procedures to the database
  • Use the LBO tester to execute and test middle tier customizations
  • Configure and add custom fields for Onyx Lists
  • Use the Onyx VB Step Template to create COM objects
  • Implement an end to end customization involving the database, middle tier and UI

Objective: Participants will learn how to customize and deploy the Onyx Employee Portal - Web Client and learn the skills necessary to create, integrate and write metadata for Data Access Components into the OEAS COM+ environment.

Target Audience: Developers responsible for customizing and maintaining the Onyx Enterprise Application Server and Onyx Employee Portal - Web Client.

Prerequisites: Attendance in Architecture and Configuration (formerly Administering OEAS), or equivalent experience, is required prior to this course.

Experience using several of the following web technologies is strongly recommended: Internet Information Server (IIS), Dynamic HTML Pages (DHTML), ASP, ADO, VBScript, JavaScript/JScript, and Microsoft Visual Interdev 6.0. Participants should also be proficient with MS Visual Basic Development and ASP Programming.

Note: For individuals with limited experience working with Web Applications, the Introduction to OEP Web Technologies course is strongly recommended.

Course Length: Five days, 9:00am - 5:00pm
